WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR JOINING JKA NY?
We recommend that anyone interested in joining our dojo (place of training) visit to watch a class first. This will give you a good sense of what our daily practice is like and allow you to ask an instructor more questions about our community. Please CONTACT US to schedule your visit. (We recommend visiting on Sunday at 11:30 am).
A one-month beginner’s course is offered each calendar month. This class meets in conjunction with other sessions, typically with a dedicated instructor for one-on-one or small-group instruction. We are a family-friendly dojo that encourages older children or parent / guardian to join with any younger children (minimum 6 years old and with instructor approval).
A uniform is not required for beginners; they may practice in loose-fitting, body-concealing clothes (i.e., a t-shirt tucked into sweatpants). Upon completion of the beginner’s course, the student may practice in either the intermediate or combination classes; a uniform (gi) is then mandatory.
TO JOIN OUR DOJO
- Students fill out the JKA NY Registration and Online Application Form
- Pay the one-time registration fee of $40 (before your first training)
- Make your first dues payment (before your first training)
WHAT DO I WEAR FOR MY FIRST LESSONS?
As a beginner, for your first or second lesson, you may wear modest, comfortable, and plain athletic clothing that is easy to move in. Please avoid clothes with overly large logos, patterns, or bright/neon colors. For your lower body, sweatpants, track pants, or other full-length pants are acceptable. Please do not wear shorts. For your upper body, a plain t-shirt or full-sleeve shirt is acceptable.
HOW DO I PURCHASE A UNIFORM?
Please purchase your own uniform as soon as possible. We do not sell or require any particular brand of uniform. Our only requirement is that it be a plain white karate uniform (no logos, patches, emblems). Beginners should not spend too much money on an expensive uniform. Here is a basic uniform vendor: Ki International White Uniforms. Feel free to purchase any plain white uniform from a vendor of your choice.
DOJO ETIQUETTE:
- Leave shoes outside the dojo.
- Bow when you enter and leave the dojo and place bags against the wall.
- Students must be on time. Being late is disrespectful to the instructor and to your fellow students. If late, please sit seiza near the entrance until the instructor bows you into class. Also, be humble by lining up last and when pairing up for any drills.
- Uniforms must be clean and in good condition.
- Feet must be clean. Toenails and fingernails must be kept short to avoid injury to yourself and to others.
- No jewelry (rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.) may be worn.
- No eyeglasses during sparring, unless they are designed for safety.
- There is no eating or drinking in the dojo.
- Students may have sewn ties to fasten the uniform in front.
- Students may wear a plain white t-shirt / athletic shirt under their uniform top.
- Unless instructed otherwise, always line up properly behind the student in front of you and to the right of your senpai (senior). If you are late, sit in seiza until you are recognized. Then, line up to the right.
- There is no talking during class. Stay focused and listen only to the instructor. Have an empty mind when entering the dojo and for the duration of class. At the end of class, after reciting the dojo kun, wait for your senpai on the left to bow before you do.
